My Property taxes on a 40 year old home with 3 br is $9000 per year. In Scottsdale a 5 bedroom house with 3 bath and a pool that is 5 years old, The taxes are $1900...

Just looking for a better life for me and my family. We need to go where there is a good population of residence. Good schools of course. and not alot of seasonal owners. Moderator cut: snip

I have been in South Jersey most of my life. Im about 20 minutes from Philly and 40 from Atlantic city. This could be the best move of our life or we could fall on our faces. My late father taught me not to be afraid to fail, Im not. But im also excited about the possibilities of succeeding. Were looking into Deer Valley Unified School District . Seems to be central to scottsdale and sorounding areas.

Thoughts or locations would be appriciated.

The Nortera area of north Phoenix is a very nice area, fantastic shopping and not too far from Scottsdale. Peoria is another city that has decent schools and you may want to explore that as well. There really are too many areas to mention and knowing where you expect to work will be a big factor for you. Traffic can be dicey here. Most of the seasonal owners are in the 55+ developments.

You did not mention if you will be working and where. The valley is very spread out and the commute could kill you especially with $4 gas.

The Northwest Valley where you are looking is very nice and DV schools are good, but consider other areas as well especially if you are working in central Phoenix, Scottsdale or the east valley.

I know you are used to commutes in Jersey, but it is different here. Maricopa county is larger than the state of NJ. Just imagine driving one end of the state to the other every day.

There are great affordable communities at all ends of the valley.

True that the county is bigger but Nj does have about a million more people ( most of them rude) lol It would take me 4 hours to run from top to bottom.
Im a painter for a living and am self employed. Here in Nj I work mostly for designers and do mostly high end finishes. Moderator cut: snip Ive always been a hustler and look forward to the new challenge. I have 2 children 7 and 4. Im expecting work to come from all over the county but probibally mostly in Scottsdale.

Good luck, NJBuddy. We escaped from NJ 8 years ago to NC. Looking to AZ now, but no matter what, anything is better than NJ. BTW, $9,000 in property taxes is considered LOW in the area we came from.

make sure this move will work!!....lots of out-of-work painters out here!.....but there are signs of a very slow recovery in the works....

make sure the kids will be OK with a move, but they may still be young enough to not care....

try renting for a year to make sure it'll work....this'll allow you to check out areas for possible purchase.....or, if you can possibly manage, take a vacation out here and look around.....lots of differences from NJ!!

Glendale is swimming in over a billion $ in debt now due to bad commitment to sports, (hockey arena and Spring baseball training) as well as spending millions fighting an Indian casino wanting to build in a county island next to Glendale. Their bond rating was recently dropped. Currently working on next year's budget and proposing slashing funding and closing libraries, parks, etc. Has the highest water, sewer, sanitation fees in the Valley. Peoria seems to be run much better.
