OK, lets say you have a Friday morning, 9am departure at Sky Harbor. You are on SWA, so will be checking a bag at the curb. What time would you leave your home? Tell us your approximate location. This may be interesting.

I would leave at 6:30am, and I live close to the VA, so I would be on the LR.

If it is a standard domestic flight I would leave my house at 0630 which would put me at the airport around 0730. 1.5 hours to park and get checked in is sufficient at Sky Harbor. I live in Goodyear off Cotton Lane.

not checking a bag and having printed my boarding pass beforehand, I'd leave home at about 7:30am, living about 15 minutes from Sky Harbor....

Done it several times. Leave at 630. Plenty of time to drop car at parking lot, catch a shuttle and get through security (oh, and have my Cinnabon!). I am in Goodyear south of the Gila River on Estrella Prkway.

I'd leave at 6:15 (no later).I should get there in an hour or less. If I catch traffic much worse than I predicted, I'd hit the airport 7:40. My wife would be telling me to leave at 5:45. Way too early in my book. I live in Surprise.

That should be fine, IMO.

The metric that I use is 70 minutes, and I average that trip about once per week. That is how much time I need from my house, to the gate at the airport, via light rail. The shortest front door to gate time via light rail, has been 45 minutes. This takes into account the following factors:

I live on the north side of downtown and within 10 minutes walk of the light rail
No checked bags
First class/Priority security line
Light rail time from my stop to 44th/Washington is 20 minutes

This presumes that there are no major, but unlikely problems, like a crash on the light rail tracks (I had that happen before). The 70 minute time I use is "sorta" comfortable, but because of the downtown hotels, finding a cab or airport car is a workable backup plan if I'm running late.

Also I don't fly Southwest so I'm not sure what that's like or how it might add to the time needed.
