Thanks for all the great information! Definitely looking to buy. I haven't done base housing in a long time, and I'm not too excited about living on base. We've kinda narrowed it down to Suprise, Goodyear, and eastern Buckeye, but who knows what will be available and where it might be when we get there. Some houses go super quick, and some are on the market for a while. My wife and I are coming down about 30 days prior to the move to house hunt and get a place under contract.

Thanks for the help
B

Do you have a broad range for budget?

Is your wife going to be working as well?

Do you have a period of time that you plan on being here?

I would honestly avoid eastern buckeye (not even sure what that is.......) unless by eastern buckeye you mean Verrado

Surprise & Goodyear are both good bets and a lot of good information on Goodyear has been provided thus far

Good choice when you rounded it up Surprise or Goodyear out of a bunch.... For me, Surprise is boring, isolated that is too far for everything.

"Preconceived stereotypes"? What are you talking about? The OP was concerned about driving time to base. I was just trying to keep the drive to the base under 15 minutes.

I don't know what the OP's job entails. Perhaps he needs to live fairly close to base due to his job.

You've been around here awhile, I'm surprised you're asking "what are you talking about?" as the advice normally given (by those that don't live south of the 10 or even in Goodyear) is to stay north of the 10. The majority of the city of Goodyear lies south of the 10 so it is poor advice to simply tell someone to look in Goodyear but stay north of the 10 especially without giving a reason as you did in your first post.

There are some reasons to stay north of the 10 (somewhat better schools, more shopping, closer to the base, etc.) but you should mention the reason you're giving the advice and not just say "stay north of the I-10" which makes it appear that the rest of Goodyear has nothing to offer. He is asking about communities that are way farther out than 10-15 minutes so he can look in all of Goodyear and be much better off than some of the other communities he mentioned and still have a "realistic commute" that he asked for. You even put it in bold to make it appear that it is critical to stay north of the 10 which may create "preconceived stereotypes" to someone that is asking for advice on where to live when they move to the area.

That post sounded like a inaccurate generalization to me as well. IMO, the best part of Goodyear is south of I-10, Estrella. Great schools, great community feel, super views in every direction. We have a lot of Luke people who live here too. It will add about 10 minutes to the commute, but it is worth it to many. Those couple minutes in the car change the character of living in Phoenix.

I moved to the valley back in '96. I currently live by Westgate. Back in the day, I actually dreamed about moving to Estrella Mountain Ranch, but the more I went to see the place, the more I realized that it's a long drive. Back then, there wasn't much around there, but, as you point out, they have built up that area quite a bit which means more cars and more traffic lights.

When I was on active duty, my job required me to be on call and be at work ASAP. My spouse is retired military, so I have base privileges and I use them. I usually go to the commissary and afterwards drive south on Dysart to hit the bank and other supermarkets/stores. So, I know, traffic can be a bit heavy entering the gate in the am.

I apologize if I ruffled some sensitive feathers. I work and I am around a diverse crowd all the time, I actually go into Maryvale to shop at Ranch Market and also buy food in little ethnic restaurants, etc. so the aforementioned (and still elusive to me) stereotype did not cross my mind.

The stereotype I encounter the most on these threads is East vs West. I do not live in Avondale, north or south of the I-10. I do, however, visit that area a lot. What am I missing?

I'd really appreciate it if you spell it out for me in a DM.

Default Relocating to Luke in July 2013

I'll be moving from San Antonio to Phoenix in a few months and wanted to know the nice areas in which to leave. I currently own a home here in San Antonio and plan on renting it out; so when I get to Arizona, I will be looking for a nice rental property. Any assistance would be appreciate!

You did not provide much info, we could point you toward Prescott and commute into Phoenix, are you planning on working in the valley? If so where? Do you want to live close or? What price range? Do you want acreage? Bringing pets along?
This is why it is MUCH better to come see and explore what your requirements might be.
