With the Phoenix cooling season here, I decided to do this poll: what brand of AC do you use?

We have two Carrier 14 SEER units that our builder installed.

What is the point of making this a poll, or, for that matter, having this thread at all. You aren't looking for recommendations on what brand to buy, so your point would be???

No, it is just to know which is the most popular brand around here. It seems based on my past experience, many builders use Janitrol/Goodman since they are generally cheaper than the other brands. We have another house in Tolleson that we are renting out, and it has a Goodman heat pump. Also, when we lived in Virginia Beach from 1994 to 2001, we had a Janitrol A/C.

Specifically, I would like to know if this is the case here in AZ. Our builder (Fulton) currently uses Carrier; they previously used Trane.

Well, since many of the units out there are builder installed, which may have nothing to do with "popularity" and everything to do with the builder getting a good deal on a large purchase, everyone can take the information here with the appropriate grain of salt.

Of course, some brands may be more popular than others among different builders.

I'm guessing it is a ductless split system, is that correct? They are much more efficient than window units and comparable in efficiency to central AC.

yes, and it is on a 230 volt connection. Small cottage.....I'll put a mini-split in the kitchen if necessary, but I will will not be using the ducts again, and if that blows an FHA deal, I will not care less. I have it on 80 and it is quite cold. A friend of mine built 14, 2600 sf homes, in the Tropics, and did not use one single duct.

Looks like Goodman has the most votes. Not surprised.

FYI, the builder of the house in Tolleson that we are renting out (the one with the Goodman heat pump) is K. Hovnanian (built in 2005).

Goodman has come from nowhere to number 2 in the nation (after Carrier). ACs are pretty much commodity these days. Compressors are all Copeland or Tecumseh, most everything else like fans and TXVs and switches are off the shelf from China and Mexico. My AC guy says Trane has more proprietary parts than most making service more expensive and sometimes delaying it as well.
