Wanna hear one better than that....in a local city here in Iowa the city just agreed to buy out a casino no investors were interested in....on top of the 10's millions for that they are going to spend 10's millions more on a whole new location and wouldn't tell the citizens at the last meeting what the costs were going to be...lol....omg

I do have to tell you thought that property taxes in Glendale are about 25% of what they would be here....so they must be doing something right.

[quote=Marv101;26608494]It sounds as though your city government has the same delusional and preposterous mindset that keeping a professional sports team will only enchance your city's 'reputation'.

The city of Cincinnati's politicians was demolished on the front page of the WSJ earlier this year because their football & baseball stadia are both losing money hand over fist.

It's not as simple as your statement.

You know the Coyotes will be here to stay when Arizona makes a specialty license plate for them like all the other teams here.

The entire metropolitan Phoenix area isn't suited for hockey.

NHL teams do not usually have a high fanbase in sunbelt cities.

Other things being equal, a central location in the Phoenix metro area would be much better for attendance than a location on any of the fringes. Given that hockey doesn't have a strong following traditionally in Phoenix, all the more would you want a central location. If I had been the Coyotes, I would have kept trying to get something built in central Phoenix, south Scottsdale or a similar location instead of heading to Glendale.

Agreed, but too late now. And the NIMBYs would have stayed out in force in all those areas.

I don't think the location is so much the issue.

There are professional sports teams in other metros that play in suburban stadiums or outside the downtown areas, no problems with them as far as I know.

But when a city considers their NHL team with low attendance a priority and has to slash public services that many people depend on, a red flag should be raised.

Very true but I don't think you'll find another hockey arena in such a setting. It simply does not work for a niche sport. I've been here only 2 years and cannot give the ins and the outs of the Coyotes saga. I can say, however, that among people I talk hockey with here, location always comes up.

They missed the boat. The arena should have been built on the Reserve next to Scottsdale (what's it called?) the natives could have built a hotel and huge Casino and made a killing.
