Hi All,
I'm seriously considering moving to the Phoenix area in a few months. I currently live in Jacksonville Fl, and the job market here totally sucks. I've been unemployed since Jan and right now it doesn't look promising.
I have 25 yrs in the Distribution/Warehousing/Inventory field and been in middle management the past 10 yrs.
How's the job market?? Are company's hiring?? High unemployment rate??

My daughter just moved to Phoenix 3 weeks ago, and so far very pleased with the city. And she got a new job today. My Son-in-law got hired on with the Suns, that's why they are in Phoenix.

Im just wondering if its worth it to pack up and head west.

ps. I also lived in Hawaii for 10 yrs (back in the 80s) and I know flights are cheaper from Phoenix than Fla.

Thoughts???

If you have a lease that you can get out of in florida, I don't see what you've got to lose, except maybe a decrease in your unemployment check (AZ is quite low, maxing out at $245/week.) If you can live with your daughter and husband for awhile, that would be waaaay better, because finding a job here ain't gonna be any easier than Florida.

Start by contacting Anazn, who has a distribution center here. Take whatever job you can get - don't be expecting to walk into another middle management jib. Sorry, but you're going to have to work your way up the ladder aaib, but it should happen much more quickly with your experience.

And the cost of flights to Hawaii should be the LAST thing on your mind right now. Sheesh!

You get your unemployment from the state you lived in at their amount, not from AZ at their amount.

The Phoenix area is a big distribution center and that is one of the fastest growing areas of the local economy. Amazon, Dicks Sporting Goods, Macys, Penneys and dozens of other companies have warehouses and shipping here. Much of it is in SW Phoenix, Goodyear, Surprise area. You may have found your sweet spot.

Thanks for your reply's.
First, I dont lease, I own my home. I consider it my "Home Base" for the world, so it wont be for sale.
I can stay with my daughter and SIL in their home for as long as I need to, if it came to that. But for me it will only be temporarily.
And the costs of flights to Hawaii is my concern. Sheesh!!!

One bright note, as I was researching the job market, I found a company (B/E Aerospace) that I formally worked for until they closed the local facility back in 2002. And they have open positions in my field. So now they have all my info.

I've noticed there are a lot of distribution centers in the Phoenix area. Thanks for the heads up Ponderosa.
