Copper and metal thieves could be in for a shock when they try to sneak into some of Phoenix's scrapyards.

The Phoenix City Council this month lifted the city's 97-year ban on electric fences, allowing light- and heavy-zoned industrial properties to install them for security to keep out vandals, burglars or other intruders.

Hopefully APS starts using them around their transformer stations to stop the squirrels from causing power outages.

They're getting electrocuted anyway, so it might as well happen on the fence.

Cute - protect the *scrapyards*.... that *buy* all of that stolen copper.

you wouldn't want the people with the money *behind* those thefts to get ripped off.

Don't know anything about modern electric fences. How hard is it to steal the electric (presumably copper wiring) part of the fence? One of the parks in my neighborhood has a problem with people stealing the security cameras.

In my opinion, security depends on a person monitoring and then taking action. Automatic systems by themselves, while helpful, won't stop crime.

I think the wire used is thin steel. Not worth stealing..
