I had a thought this morning as I was out running. It was already in the mid 90s at the time, and city sprinklers were on in and around the parks. I was tempted to run through them, but didn't because I didn't know if the water was potable. Anyone have a guess?

I'm wondering if they use potable water because of the number of children that undoubtedly do the same thing?

Totally depends on the city the park is in and I'd bet which park it is. Give a call to the parks department and I'd bet they could tell you for certain.

Could you let us know which park and the answer? I've been wondering the same thing...even at 5am it's 90!

Here's another way to tell... You know the sprinkler valve boxes that are usually buried in the ground??? Most of them have green covers/lids. If you see purple covers, or purple pipe, the system is using reclaimed water.

That's good to know. I looked it up, and apparently that's a particular shade of purple they use to indicate reclaimed water, and it's really purple. You can't miss it. Also, it seems to be common practice to put up signs, and I haven't seen either. I'm sure that the risk of getting people sick is a headache most people wouldn't want to deal with.

Not to mention the smell. While cleaner than what it came from reclaimed water still has a "waste" smell to it. I remember it well from the company I worked for as all our new buildings were using reclaimed water in all the toilets and urinals so the restrooms always had an odor not to mention it was real popular to use for watering city lawns at one time.

Well, this was a surprising answer.

I called Tempe Parks and Recreation, and apparently the sprinklers around Tempe Town Lake are using reclaimed water. Yuck. No wonder I never see anyone running through them.
