How difficult is it to find a hair styling position in Arizona? I have been licensed in Illinois for the past 10 years and we will be relocating there in 2013. The areas we are looking to live are possibly in the Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Surprise, Chandler areas. Any input would be helpful. How difficult would it be o open a salon. What would you recommend? Thanks .

If you have a license you could get a job anywhere.

if your good, hair salons are always looking to hire. And opening a new salon is easy, as long as u can afford the build out and equipment

people need haircuts everywhere !

I would not open a salon until you had been here working a while, getting a job as a stylist, once you are licensed, should be no problem.

We just moved here from Wisconsin and I also have my cosmetology license so I've recently gone through all this. You'll first have to apply for reciprocity. If Illinois requirements meet or exceed Arizona's requirements, you'll just need to take a Law class and an Infection class plus pay the required fees. As far as finding a job, you shouldn't have any problems finding a job - salons are always looking for talented hairdressers. As far as opening a salon - you'll probably need a clientele first so you'll probably need to find employment somewhere for a year or so to build that up, then go out on your own first. I'm not sure what you're used to back in IL, but out here most salons run on commission or booth rentals except of course, larger chains like Great Clips, etc. Otherwise, as far as state regulations go, it's not too difficult to "open a salon". Good luck!
