I would never live in Tempe, but that's just me! (lots of crime) The other areas have good and bad areas. I never hear bad things about Scottsdale though. My 27 year old brother has lived there for years and liked it.

My son is your age and would definitely recommend Scottsdale (Old Town area) or Tempe (Mill Ave area). Lots of night life and young professionals.

Hey guys thanks again for the valuable info it really has helped a lot...for a young guy moving cross country it's kind of overwhelming trying to make all these grown up decisions for the first time so I do appreciate you all chiming in.

Btw what do you guys mean when you say "Old town, Scottsdale" scottsdale is a big city so is old down the center? or downtown? or south scottsdale?

I found two apartment complexes in scottsdale that fit my budget and are close to work...One is Tatum Place they're under $700 for a 1 br 1 ba and the other is Sun King apartments which are on e thomas road which is If I Were to guess closer to the old town area?

I'm leaning towards tatum because it's a lot closer to my place of work, is decent priced and seems newer than Sun King apartments and I think it is gated as well?

Anyone know anything specifically about those two? good bad?

Thanks you guys have definitely made up my mind to try to stay in the scottsdale area

Again...this is more of a career move for me so I don't know if I'll even have time to go out on the weekends (one of my hobbies is poker and i honestly can see myself more at the tables than out at the bars...and casino arizona is in scottsdale too I think)

Talking Stick is further north on the reservation and would be closer to your work. It is east of the 101 off Indian Bend. Casino Arizona is east of the 101 off McKellips. Talking Stick is newer and nicer, but some guy recently won $5 million on a slot machine at Casino Arizona, so take your pick!

When I use the broad area of "living near Old Town" I mean being inside the red box on the map (see attached)

I would not live in Sun King - the place looks terrible everytime I drive by and a quick google search shows terrible reviews.

Tatum Place would be too far north for my tastes - the north part of scottsdale tends to be an older crowd and more expensive restaurants.

While I understand you will be busy with work, I am assuming you will have at least some weekends free? If thats the case, going out or doing some sort of happy hour with your college alum, etc. is going to be the best way to meet people.

As for price, a quick search shows that some of my suggestions may have moved upwards in price since I last looked at them...not sure I have much advice except to say maybe try to be a little flexible on price and give it a good look in that area.

Keep us posted!

Hi, another idea is that you may want to run an ad on craigslist under "Housing Wanted." Put general info about yourself, what areas you're looking at, the rental amt. you can pay, etc. You may find a garage apt., cottage or Casita that would be more private that an apt. complex. I know 2 home owners that always look under that category when they're looking for tenants. Good luck to you! You'll love AZ. Much better than "back east" - LOL!

anil099, if you're still wondering I moved to Scottsdale last month and I don't think it's all that expensive. Sure it probably has more higher-end shops per capita and all that but it doesn't mean an average person can't afford to live here. Just live in your budget and it can be done even in Scottsdale.

I see lots of nice-looking apartments near Downtown Scottsdale that list very reasonable rent and they seem like they're in the nicer parts too. Thinking the more north you go would be the more expensive parts.

Hi thanks again guys also another reason I'm going cheaper and closer to work is well I won't be there to see the place and I can always move when my lease is up I'm a single guy who doesn't really gave any responsibilities/obligations to stay in one place so after living in the area and experiencing it and saving up some money I can easily move in a year if the apartment I choose doesn't work out

Very true, just one year out of your life. South Tempe would've been a lot of gas $ so glad you're staying close to work.

So, did you find a place that works for you?
