It's an interactive map made by the Census Bureau and the New York Times. It opens on New York City but just scroll out and over to Arizona and zoom in on Maricopa County. It really really surprised me how definite some of the borders are between the brown and white areas. Some of the areas I know well, like "the Square" in North Phoenix bounded by Cave Creek Rd., Greenway Pkwy., 32nd St., and Bell Rd. It's almost a perfect square of Latinos surrounded by white neighborhoods. Just thought this was interesting.

I'm not trying to come off as racist here but just look at the poor run down areas....those are majority Hispanic/African American. Central phx, west Mesa, maryvale, Laveen....all majority minority...all poor and crime ridden. I agree that correlation doesn't always indicate causation but this trend seems to follow in ALL major metros

Poor white people commit crimes too, it just so happens that median income is much higher for whites than it is for minorities overall. When a poor family has children it can be hard for those children to escape from poverty due to a generally lower quality of education and lack of opportunities. Add to that the segregation that occurs due to housing prices, where poor people are forced to live in certain areas, and people segregating themselves when choosing neighborhoods (it's not just minorities, whites do this all the time), and it makes sense why a lot of the major cities have minority areas with high crime rates. It is a societal problem that has to do with a lot of other factors, like the environment in which thy were raised. It is rather close-minded to suggest that many people are criminals based solely on the color of their skin. I understand you likely did not mean it to sound like that, though.

Oddly Tucson has an almost identical pattern, the West and South sides are brown while the North and East sides are white (mostly).

This is the local Phoenix relocation forum. Discussion must be about Phoenix. Even if the map link shows cities all over the U.S., not just Phoenix, this thread must stick to the Phoenix angle. Discussion of Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, etc. is off topic and those posts will be deleted going forward. If you want to discuss national issues or compare cities, please take the discusion to another forum.

Census Tract 319101 in Tempe is one of the most diverse of any of them: 31% white, 3% black, 29% Hispanic, 32% Asian. It also appears to be one of the more densely populated census tracts, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I believe that is where the Indian Students Association campus housing is located. Which explains the large number of Asians in that area.

I'll bet a pile of money if someone did a map like that 100 years ago; MY people, the "Irish", would've been the bad ones. Instead of names like "Rodriguez", it'd be "O'Boyle" and so on.
