So I'm a young guy fresh out of college and I just got a job that is going to require me to relocate from Orange County California to Mesa AZ. I've heard pretty mixed reviews about the city. The city's website and brochure make it look very beautiful, though I know they only highlight the good. So i was wondering what are everyone's thoughts? If the city is generally on the squalid side I'm sure there are some nice areas somewhere. Any recommendations on where I should look for an apartment?

I'd live in Tempe and commute, or stick to the northeast side of Mesa. None of Mesa is "squalid", but there are some areas that are nicer than others.

Lol, along Broadway between Alma School and Stapley is pretty squalid. But the best sonoran hot dogs come from Mickey's at Broadway and MacDonald, so it's not all bad!

^^ Definitely^^^ Tempe would be great for you. Mesa - not so much. Easy commute.

If you want to stick to Mesa, I would stay on the north east side OR I would take the other poeples advice and go to Tempe. It's right near Mesa and much nicer. Chandler wouldn't be bad either but there's a younger crowd in Tempe.

I second Tempe. Decent nightlife there because of the ASU crowd. If you'd rather live out "near nature", then you could try East Mesa, which is nice... but I would pick Tempe, first. East commute into Mesa.

I live in East Mesa and now that you mention it, you are absolutely correct. I'm near Ellsworth and Brown. I'm almost in the middle of the desert yet I'm close to everything I could ever imagine I'd ever need in the way of shopping but nightlife? Yes, it's a little lacking around here but I haven't checked out the nightlife around here either.

It is very nice out there. I think that it is difficult to commute from there into Phoenix or Tempe (or West Mesa) since there's really only one way in... the 60. It gets pretty jammed up during rush hour. I am considering moving out to Sossaman near the 60 but it would be a far commute into the Phoenix area and I'd have to battle traffic every day! Lovely area, though.

Not true. You have the north part of the Loop 202, also. That's actually a quicker way to get to Tempe/Phoenix since there is less traffic generally.
