Add me to the list of thinking about relocating to the area. My husband recently lost his job here in Michigan (imagine that!) after 15 years with the company.

We are both in agreement that we need to relocate and just "start over".

His company gave him all of his vacation time he hadn't used (and it just started in January so that helps TREMENDOUSLY). Plus, we have 20K saved up we can use and unemployment benefits.

SO..here are my questions: How in the heck can someone rent without a verifiable job? Anyone know if any places can look at a bank account and have that be ok? Or is it a JOB they are after? Obviously, we plan on jobs once we are down there...don't anticipate that to be a problem, but you've got to have a roof over your head once in town.

Any input would be appreciated!

Sorry, I have nothing valuable to add regarding renting without a job, but I recently relocated from the mitten and couldn't be happier here. I hope it works out for you. Life is FAR more enjoyable here IMO. Good luck.

That is EXACTLY what a friend of mine said, too. He left in 2008 and said he wished he had done it a LONG time ago. He told me, too, that jobs are looking MUCH better out there than they used to....that's pretty encouraging!

Extended Stay Phoenix, AZ - Dunlap, Value Place - extended stay hotels and apartments.

No landlord worth renting from will accept less.

Get a job (any job at any pay) doing as close to what you did before.
Find a place you can afford on THAT amount of money.

I thought the same thing, from the Extended Stay reference, to the job and landlord advice. I think that's the best answer for the OP.

I've read people on these boards talking about doing it. Of course I can't find the threads now. I remember one saying he just paid a 6mos lease in advance which sounds like something you could do.

i have recently read of landlords being o.k. with a bank statement due to the large influx of people coming to the valley. extended stay is probably the best route though.
