I just moved from Houston last weekend. I'm finding that I really notice the difference between the dry air here and the humidity of Houston. I'm quickly using up all the lotion that I've barely touched for the last couple years. A big thing is that's bugging me is static in my clothes and hair. For the clothes I seem to think there's some kind of dryer sheet that will help - does anyone know what I'm thinking of? Is there any type of conditioner or other hair product that you recommend so that my hair doesn't feel so dry and brittle? Thanks!

If you own your house, then you will probably want to have a water softener installed if you do not have one already. The water is "hard" here, and a water softener makes a big difference. Without one, skin gets dry and ashy real easily.

You might consider buying a couple humidifiers- Walgreens always has them.

There's an anti-static spray on the market as well.

What is "hair"?

lisa1120, this is the time of year I notice the dryness too. For us, our skin doesn't need even half as much lotion (most of the time none at all) in the spring and summer here as it does beginning now through the winter. So, good news I think your skin will feel better beginning in spring too.

I haven't used this product in years, but I know the stores still sell it...I think I remember it being called "Static Cling"....in a black spray bottle with orange lettering. It can be used on material and hair. Regarding hair product, we just use a cheap, but good conditioner.

Ha ha ha. Yeah, about that.....
Okay, it's DRY here. REALLY dry here. You willAGE very quickly here no matter what you do to try to combat it. It's an unfortunatelfact of life here. Sure, use sunscreen, but the dry air will suck any youth you have right out of your skin. Sorry, but yeah, that is one sucky thing about living here.
Now, someone mentioned a water softener - GREAT idea. The water IS super hard here and no amount of conditioner will help. But, the good news is, I *think* most newer homes have a softener already or a reverse osmosis (sp) system.
Dryer sheets will help, but I never really had a hard time with my laundry having static.
Someone else mentioned a humidifier - FANTASTIC idea. It is the ONLY thing that will save your skin unless you go to a skin specialist or plastic surgeon. I've blown through several room humidifiers. I know my other home has a dehumidifier (for the summers) and humidifier (for the winter) on my AC and heater, but I don't have one here. Maybe some of the newer homes here will have those built in, which would help greatly.
Yup, bloody noses, allergies, dry skin and cracked heels. All a part of our great dry heat. LOL

I'm stopping on the way home to buy a second humidifier. My 2 small children aren't sleeping well because of the dry rocks in their noses. It will get worse once the heat gets turned on.

Yep dry skin and static I remember it well. You need a water softener for sure. We didn't have one for years and my husband swears the hard water pulled the hair off his head. Use a good face cream so your skin doesn't start cracking. A humidifier is a great idea, my nephew get bloody noses constantly from the dryness. Some people are more sensitive to it than others.

My hair went entirely wonky when we moved to AZ. I began using a product that is a leave-in treatment by Sebastian called "Potion 9". I have fairly long hair, (about 6 inches past my shoulders), and it takes me about 4-6 months to go through an entire 5.1 fl oz tube. You can find it at most any local hair salon or even at Wal*mart for about $13-$15.

For a side note Sheena, how is the beach? Is the humidity there nice? Or is it getting to you? I'm still planning my escape to the coastal area of the east. I bet it's getting nice there with the fall season.

I'm not too sure about installing a water softener since I live in an apartment. But I'll definitely check into a humidifier... I think they had some really cute ones at Target. I also appreciate the recommendation for Potion 9. Thanks everyone!
