Phooey. I would ask the HOA what to do since they are the ones who want you to do something.

I would rather have a root canal than ask our HOA anything - they put the "I" times two in "IDIOT"...but thanks for the suggestions

Great idea! I called around this morning and talked to two powder coating companies...both declined to "coat" because of the mechanical parts. Back to the drawing board...

You never did say what the name of the company was who installed the units and is still in business 20 years later. It's funny after all the years of being in business no one had ever asked them about painting them yourself. Again, if you paint them you will ruin them. Simple. The slat material is manufactured in Germany to very close tolerances. Paint will gum them up and they will either never open again or they will never close again. You can take them down and put up shade screens if this is an issue of not wanting to spend the money. What color were they originally? I have had rolladens for many years. Mine came from Roll-a-shield. The first company in the valley to manufacture them was AGI, American German Industries. They went bankrupt in the mid eighties. Their product was called German-American Blinds. The slats are powder coated aluminum. Can you post a picture of one of your units on this forum?
