Greetings. We're considering relocating to the Phoenix metro area this year, however, a main concern of ours is the public schools, in particular, special education. We have a 12 year old, severely affected Autistic boy. He's on the very low end of the spectrum (non-verbal). Thoughts, recommendations, beware-of's is very much appreciated. ~shari

The Accel(spelling?...something like that) school on 35th Ave&Peoria in Phoenix is a public special needs school that seemsto cater to all types of special needs students. Sweetwater School in the Washington School District on 43rd Ave&Sweetwater in Glendale has a good special needs program. That's all I'm aware of I'm sure others who have experience in that department will chime in.

Public schools are ok. Some better than others. But your child will be eligible for ALTCS and the AZ dept of developmental disabilities (DDD) which is where the big source of therapy and services will come from. You also should contact SARRC or HOPE group and Raising Special Kids. They have tons of resources for you and can also discuss school districts too. Much depends on where your house is, where you are working, etc etc. so you need to know that before thinking about a school district. Arizona has expanded its autism services greatly in the last 10 years and you will be pleased, I think.

Our little girl, who is 100% handicapped went a few years to the school for the blind and deaf. Highly recommend this school. They are north of downtown.
We lived at the time in Buckeye, this is a public school.
