Google picks Charlotte, 8 other metro areas, as next possible Google Fiber locations | CharlotteObserver.com
Great news for Phoenix - At least we are in the running.

This is specific to Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe...not the entire metro area so you'd have to live in one of those three cities to take advantage of Google Fiber.

Do they plan on being able to get it everywhere in the cities? Like could I move into W6th in Tempe and just call them and have it?

meh...it is only as good as its peering. I am sure that most of the larger CLECs and ILECs are going to be very wary of peering with Google Fiber in some areas due to their own backbone constraints. If you have 40-100Gb/s backbone links (most are still 10Gb/s at this point), introducing a bunch of residential customers that have access to 1Gb/s speeds to their home EACH can really bog down the rest of the network.

Google's 1Gb fiber sounds awesome as a matter of principle. But I can really only see this being useful for someone who streams super/ultra HD content to multiple devices all day or someone who constantly transfer large amounts of large files. Because no matter how fast my connection has ever been, the average site is still only serving me at 200kB - 300kB/s. Once most of the servers on the internet get with the 21st century bandwagon, then I'll be more excited about it. Although yes, I do acknowledge it's good to upgrade infrastructure now to be prepared for that future, so in that respect the Google fiber thing could be good.

Indeed. Cox is gauging on internet rate like crazy. They get more expensive by 5-10% every year for the same service. Where else do you see that? They make me really mad.
