I have a friend that would like to go see the wild horses at the salt river.Have never been there myself and looking for some info as to where is the best area to go to and how to get there. Also if possible to actually come across some of the horses without hiking for miles or floating down the river. He will be staying in Scottsdale.

Years ago, I used to see them frequently on the Indian Reservation - both in North Scottsdale and a few times by the southern Casino building. But trying to find them is not something that is gonna happen like a scheduled showing.

I see them an average of once a week on the beeline mid-afternoon-ish. They are between the canals (which are north of Gilbert) on both the north and south sides of the beeline, although it is much more common to spot the south side horses...

A little less frequently, I also see them roaming free in the Fort McDowell reservation.

It is hit and miss though- I can go weeks on my commute without seeing them, and then see them every day straight for a week.

Went fishing with a friend at the Salt about 3 years ago and around beer 4 or 5, a horse with no saddle or human being near or following it came running by us. There wasn't many people around, pretty sure it was wild.

Actually, I'd doubt it was wild. They stay in packs. My first guess would be it was one that got loose from Saguaro Lake Ranch.

It varies when and where you see them. I have seen them frequently along Bush Highway.

The last couple times I spotted horses the locations were north of Usery Pass Road, and then the next time was north of Saguaro Lake on the east side of Bush Highway. That time was after a rain, and the horses were off in a field grazing on flowers or something. I wouldn't have noticed, except there were a couple of cars pulled off the road and I saw cameras out, which drew my attention to them. I have seen other horses before at random places in that general area also.

Those are just sightings from passing through in the car.

There are lots of them. A whole Facebook page is devoted to them, there are lots of pictures. The folks dedicated to them have even put together photo calendars to sell.

You can see them up at Coon Bluff
There are directions in the link.
