I don't know about Phoenix but it's hard to run around Mesa, Chandler or Gilbert when it's 105 outside day after day

Add to this the calming effect of the desert/mountain landscape and it's not hard to think of life slower here than in say Southern Cal.

I can agree to this. Phoenix in general is pretty relaxed, until you have to work here.

It can be. I guess it depends on what you have to put up with every day.

Any city in the Sunbelt can seem laid back and relaxing to an outsider, especially when seeking a vacation destination. That's what people think of Miami, San Diego, and even L.A. to a certain point. But try living in south Florida or southern CA and dealing with everyday life, the traffic, etc., and it's a much different point of view. Phoenix might seem relaxing because of the image people have of resorts, swimming pools, and the mountain views ... but again, try living here and dealing with the daily commute. Rush hour traffic is anything but relaxing. In reality, Phoenix is just like any other large city as far as day to day life is concerned.

It's pretty relaxed until you try to drive around here. I was doing 80mph on the 101 freeway yesterday and was continually being passed like I was standing still!

If you're coming from the Eastern cities, any of the western cities outside san francisco will seem extremely laid back. I spent my first year in California shocked at how laid back the work ethic is. I work with some downright lazy folks. But now I'm in the vibe and it would be hard to go back east and work.

^This. Moved here from Charlotte, NC. and I have to say is definitely more laid back out here, which for me is a welcome change. I for one do not miss the corporate structure and uptightness of the atmosphere for which I came from in Charlotte. Very refreshing to see.

So now you're "downright lazy" also?

Phoenix is wonderfully relaxing...Especially when you're rich and don't have to work, are retired and don't have to work, or are a bum and choose not to work?
