I couldn't tell you the exact formula the DMV uses, but I do know it is based on your cars current value. I had a 2012 Honda civic, and last year I paid nearly $300 for one year registration!

A 2001 car is not going to cost you much at all. I have a 2001 Nissan, and mine was about 68.00 only because I pay 25. for a specialty license plate.

My 2000 chevy is about $45~ish for a two-year plate.

Five? How do you get more than two years?

This calculator will get you pretty close to what the cost will be. Mine was off by about $4 for some reason, but when I do the calculation directly from the formula on the DMV's site, it came out right.

Anyhow, the only unknown is the value of the car that the DMV uses. My girlfriend still has the window sticker for her car when it was new, and the figure they have printed on the registration can't be gleaned from any number or any math involving any number on the window sticker.

Yeah, I was just reading on the DMV website a couple of weeks ago that the 5 year thing was only for new cars. I would imagine that's the restriction because after that you start needing smog checks (or I guess just the useless 5 minute tire-kick session they do here in AZ).
