Hi fellow desert rats,

We moved to Chandler from San Jose on June 1st. We LOVE our new home and we are learning our way around. Both my husband and I are born and raised in the SF Bay Area of CA. All our family and life long friends are back in CA. I am so lonely and I'm not sure how people get to know each other here. It is so HOT here that no one comes out of their house!!

At least my husband has people that he socializes with at work M-F. I am at home with my 2 teens all day everyday.

Any suggestions for breaking into our new community?? Any welcome groups for new residents??

Thanks!!

Welcome new desert rats!

A few ideas.

- Not sure if you live in a master planned community but if you do, certainly going to the rec center to meet people is an easy way.

- Something we've done in the past....knock on a few doors of houses near your home and introduce yourself just to break the ice.

- Same as point above but plan a little gathering/get together at your home and invite a few neighbors over to get to know each other.

I agree it's a bit trickier to meet people this time of the year. In the cooler weather, it certainly is much easier with more people about outside but the few steps above we've used in the past have worked well for us.

Good luck!

First, welcome to the valley.

Do you have a community pool? Church groups, community events, getting together with your husbands coworkers, having a party at your house and inviting the neighbors, school events, etc. are several places where you could meet other people.

Meeting people here is just like meeting people everywhere else in the country I've lived. I've met all my neighbors (that I want to meet) simply by walking up and introducing myself when they are walking to the mail box, doing their yard work, walking to their car, etc.

We're from south Florida and moved here about 5 years ago....I find people in general here are pretty friendly (much more than Florida) and now we've got two small kids and I do find the summers here a challenge as well.

One thing that has helped in summer time are the city public pools. They are extremely affordable for weekly/daily visits and eventually you end up chatting it up with the fellow adults there who also bring their kids.
Mesquite Groves is one pool that's part of city of Chandler and it's DIVINE - it has a lazy river, water slides, etc. It helps to pass the time and you can meet people there.

Library/Library sponsored events is another great spot....depending on the library, there's family movie night on Fridays/Saturdays....adult and teen classes at the library (dance, arts, self defense, exercise, etc). Look into City of Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert since they're all neighboring areas.

Good luck and remember, when the weather cools everyone will be outside
