More hypocrisy by the Republican party. I thought they were the "pro business" and the "less government" party. This is among other reasons why so many are leaving the Republican party.

They are trying to create legislation that will prevent any casino from arising in Maricopa county.

I think this is a foolish bill. Aside from showing partisanship toward special interests (ie competing tribes), it could prevent the emergence of future casinos and an possible tourist venue in the Valley in the future. I hope this bill fails miserably

Seriously, I don't understand what people's issue here is with this casino. Is the area by Indian Bend and 101 just forsaken place that everyone tries to stay as far away as possible because of the casino there? Not the last time I was by there. I really don't see what the problem here is.

… a major casino resort on its land less than two miles from Jobing.com Arena and University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The Tohono O'odham Reservation largely falls in Tucson and further south. The tribe is using a congressional settlement to designate the land near Glendale as a reservation.

Sounds to me like they're trying to keep land that has significant future income producing potential from being changed to tribal and therefore no longer included in the city tax base. Loss of funds to the city/county. Money, not politics.

B.S. if there was no casino, nobody was going to do anything with that land. It only became an issue when the casino arose because competing tribes didn't want the competition. And what about the loss of jobs that will result from the loss of the casino

This is nothing more than politics. The other tribes were getting their butt kicked in the courts. The Glendale city council changed positions. They were losing badly, so they decided to up the ante (pun intended) and buy them some senators. Of course, this is just my opinion and theory, I have no proof of this of course.

The bill also prevents the creation of casinos anywhere in Maricopa county. This also reaks of good ole boy Evangelicalism "the big bad casinos can't be created in the city because it will spread ill will"

For the party that preaches less government, this is laughable. They don't want to spend on education and medicaid but they have no problem preventing a casino from emerging. You have to love their priorities.

I'm a big fan of both senators so this really disappoints me.

Might want to be sure your facts are straight on all parties that are opposed to the casino:

The reason for not wanting it is the underhanded way the land was acquired, they used a shadow company because they did not want to let Glendale know what they were planning. All other Casinos are on reservations, this will be miles from the nearest reservation, and 120 miles from their own reservation.

Sorry, stinks to high heaven

The war against casinos is bi-partisan. Bad bill but this is not a GOP exclusive stance.

From what I've read that piece of land is a proposed Indian reservation. Those that are against it are for the fact that it only benefits the Indians. Since it's to be a Indian reservation they pay no taxes, city, county State or Federal. All monies they make goes to their reservation headquarters outside of Tucson. Nothing benefits Glendale or it's residents. Very few outside of the reservation will be employed there. Only those outside contractors initially building the casino will profit from it and those people will pay income taxes, but no reservation Indians will pay anything. Some people feel it will also bring increased crime from undesirables in the area of Maryvale, etal. Others feel that that side of town will entice the many low income people that really can't afford to gamble and causing them future financial problems.

Here is some relevant information... Glendale, AZ - Indian Reservation - Social Impacts

It sounds to me like they're just trying to keep the current law in place. The one your state voted for in 2002:

The legislation will prohibit any Indian casinos on newly acquired tribal trust lands in the Phoenix metropolitan area until the expiration of the existing tribal-state gaming compacts in 2027. Importantly, the legislation preserves the agreement made between Indian tribes and the voters who agreed to limit the number of tribal casinos in the Phoenix metropolitan area. This Act is companion legislation to a similar bill passed by a supermajority in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier in the session.

Upon introduction, SRPMIC President, Diane Enos stated, "On behalf of a broad coalition of tribal and local municipal leaders, I want to thank Senator McCain and Senator Flake for their leadership in introducing the Keep the Promise Act of 2014. This important legislation will reaffirm the tribal state gaming policy that was approved by the voters in Arizona in 2002. A key element of the policy was that Indian tribes promised there would be no additional casinos allowed in the Phoenix metropolitan area. This will stop additional county islands inside cities from becoming new casino reservations. We are hopeful through their support this legislation will move quickly through the U.S. Senate and become law."

I've never understood why so many tribes/pueblos push casinos and don't bother to develop other investments.

Exactly. It was convenient for azriverfan to post a link to the story about the Senate bill without bothering to mention the House bill included 2 AZ Democrats and 3 other Democrat Congressmen co sponsors.
