Zillow and Trulia are pretty good. Many realtors and private owners do use Craigslist, i wouldn't rule it out completely, just need to be a bit more careful with CL.

Apartments for Rent & Homes for Rent - Rent.com® Apartment Finder

736 Apartments for Rent in Phoenix, AZ - Apartments.com

Phoenix Apartments For Rent - Find Apartments for Rent in Phoenix, AZ - ForRent.com

Or you could also use an apartment locator service that doesn't charge a fee to the renter like:

Apartment Finders - Free apartment locator - Arizona apartments

And last, there are Real Estate Agents who will show you rentals that are listed on the MLS and take you around to see them. Unfortunately since the commission on rentals is very low, agents don't like to do rentals or won't do them. Good luck in your search.

I used Craiglist without issue. If you're smart, it's easy not to get scammed and it's a good source for rentals.

Try rentalhouses.com. I always use that site to advertise. (FYI- I have nothing out there now, so I am not self-promoting).

Zillow and Trulia were a waste of time for me as it was horribly outdated and incorrect regarding pets. My real estate agent got me mls access.
