I am looking for advice on different areas of the metro region. I lived in Phoenix during the mid 80's. I currently live in upstate New York and the time is right to move. I lived near 35th. Ave. and Northern back then. I'm mid 50's, separated and it will be just me in an apartment. Where would you live? East side or West? North or South? Thank you.

Are you retired or will you be working? My general rule of thumb is to live within a 10-20 minute drive of work if working. Also, what is your monthly rent budget?

Don't go back to your old neighborhood. Near me, there's a lot of affordable apartments around 12th St. and Bethany Home/Maryland (closer to Maryland). Some are multi-story larger complexes but most are one story duplex style places with no one above you banging around, sometimes with a little yard or fenced in patio.I'm guessing one bedrooms around 500-600 a month, maybe 450 or so for a studio in one of the bigger complexes.
The neighborhood is very low crime, has a lot of mature trees and green, and has some close by mountain views. There's little corner stores real close and a grocery store at 7th and Glendale about a mile away.
I've lived in apartments in some other parts of town and this east central Phoenix area has been pretty peaceful compared to the BS I've dealt with elsewhere.

I've read on these forums to stay east of the 51 due to rougher neighborhoods and such. I was curious since you live west of the 51, is that true in your opinion?

A more accurate and sure division is east of 19th Ave. but that varies as you go north and south. Saying stay east of the 51 sounds like a Scottsdale/suburban fear of Phoenix. Bear in mind Central Ave. itself, west of the 51, has plenty of mansions and older PHX money.

Guess I forgot to mention that I do work. I'm an over the road truck driver and will be keeping the truck at a secure facility near the state fairgrounds. I really have no preference to locale and don't mind the traffic. Thanks to all of you for your advice. I can't wait to get back home!!

I do agree with the above about not returning to your old neighborhood. It's not dangerous but anywhere on 35th Ave south of Dunlap has really gone downhill over the years and if you're talking about getting an apartment you really don't want to live in any of those shady complexes in that general area. I would look at apartments in east Phoenix not too far from the fairgrounds where you park your truck at. I don't know your budget but there are a lot of nice complexes in central east Phoenix and you'll be close to downtown and other amenities nearby.

Chandler, Gilbert, or Scottsdale would be my choice Metro Center has gone down hill that whole area was nice in the 80's and early 90's. Unfortunately the houses in that area have gone down hill due to investors turning them into rentals, then during the bust foreclosed. Now the area has become a poor area as prices fell allowing low cost housing which brought in low class people.

We sold a house just south of Northern at about 41st Ave in 1983 for $90K. Zillow shows that it resold in 2006 for $260K but then again in 2011 for $77K. I think it is safe to say that that neighborhood has gone downhill in recent years.
