I am moving to the Phoenix area this summer. I got a teaching job in the Maryville are - cartwright school district. My daughter and inlaws live in gilbert. I didnt really want an hour commute. But i need a good HS for another daughter still at home, and a safe area - renting budget is around $1000-$1200 - any areas i should look at or stay away from? OH and i have a son going to UAT also.

Tempe has a lot of highly rated high schools and would be approximately midpoint between work and the extended family and close to your son. It looks like you should have a variety of rentals in your price range. Search Rentals in Tempe, Arizona at Rentals.com

Don't live in Maryvale whatever you do, it's the armpit of the west valley but most other west valley areas are good, clean and safe.

Tempe or Chandler might be a good halfway point between family and job, both have good neighborhoods and some of the better schools around.

The downside is crush hour traffic, it can be a mess but if you choose to live in the east valley there might be a reverse commute driving to west Phoenix.
