I'm just poking some fun at myself here but you guys know how I always complained how our house is always hot and we basically have to run the AC year round?

Guess I was missing ceiling fans.

Just installed one in my home office room and wow what a difference (well duh, right? ). Even though the desktop thermometer still says 80º on it (about 5' behind my chair), I feel perfectly fine with the fan set on speed 2 (out of 4 speeds), cool even. Yesterday I ran the A/C for 30 minutes between 4:30 - 6:00 to be comfortable, today none at all.

Best part is that this fan uses 18.3 watts on speed 2. That literally comes out to $0.001/hour off-peak and $0.003/hour on-peak. Say I run the fan from 10am - 6pm everyday, all year long, that would be a cost of $7.30 for the WHOLE year. Pretty crazy. The low speed is half that.

So...how does this relate to the Phoenix forum? People moving here...BUY CEILING FANS!

Moving air is a good thing to cool off for sure.

Still doesn't answer the question of how your house got up to 80 degrees today though, guessing with all your windows closed? We had our windows open all day in different parts of the house and we only got up to 74 degrees. We'd freeze if we put the ceiling fan on!

Well, the rest of the house only got up to 77º, though it's basically been empty all day with us in the home office part of the house.

As for how this part gets stop hot...it faces west and gets blasted by the sun. Combine that with a computer running all day and me in here, in basically an oversized bedroom and there you go...80º.

Got ya, that's not too bad then and makes sense. I thought 80 was what your main house temp.

Enjoy the breeze! We have them in every room and in the larger open areas and it really makes a big difference as you say. You'll really enjoy it in the summer when our monsoon humidity bumps up, even with your A/C on and you probably will run your A/C a bit lower I bet, especially if you "fan" all your rooms.

Ceiling fans are a must. In the worst of summer, though, I find I need a floor fan on me to keep both my cool and my bank account.

Luckily when we had the house built we bought the optional "Lighting package" which included ceiling fan hookups in every room (plus recessed CFL can lights) so that makes it really nice now. Just ordered a fan for my wife's home office too and will have to look into something for the master bedroom and great room possibility too.

We have a ceiling fan in all 4 bedrooms, the office and a huge spanning one in the living area. They make a world of difference.
