Wikipedia claims that the phoenix metro area is 14,573 sq. miles, and

includes the City of Phoenix, much of the rest of Maricopa County, a large section of Pinal County, and small parts of southern Yavapai County.
It doesn't look like that going by my GPS software (e.g, towns and built up areas look too far apart). And 14,000 sq miles, that's what, almost 1/3rd the size of West Virginia?

Seems like too many square miles. I think they must be including places like Black Canyon City and Wickenburg in the "metro area". That's subject to intrepretation. It is getting to be wall-to-wall houses all the way to BCC these days, the school districts there are Phoenix ones, so maybe that makes sense. But a lot of Maricopa County is open desert (west) or the Tonto National Forest (NE) and a lot of Pinal is reservation land and public lands.
