Ok yep another one of these threads, so I have a typical south Scottsdale 1950's ranch house and am looking for advice on pricing for landscaping:

Front yard: small front yard (less than 1000 square feet), looking to have grass removed, xeriscape, shade trees, and some shrubs or vines to create shade on the sun exposures. I'd be removing grass so also would like to know if anyone here had good or bad experiences with Scottsdale's grass removal rebate program?

Back yard: a bit more elaborate, around 4000 square feet, currently just rocks and my pool. The pool deck could def use a remodel but I'll save that for another year. I'd like to have it tropical looking with low maintenance. A few palms trees, Mediterranean palms, drip system, possible landscape lighting if price is reasonable (personally I love the $5 solar lights you can buy at lowes), and a gazebo area. The back yard is extremely gray so I'd love to have darker rocks which seems like a waste of money as I type this, and I always love boulders if that's possible.

Any pricing ideas or good people anyone here could recommend?

Thanks!

It's more expensive then you think. Our backyard is fairly small but we wanted some decent changes. We wanted low maintenance plants, tropical/desert with drip system. Added about 30 different plants. Ripped out grass and put in small paver patio. Highest quote was 14k, lowest was 9k. It can be quite a range and more than you expect to get it done right. Always make sure they are contracted, licensed and guarantee their work. We had our work done last November and we are still very happy with it.

This sounds about right...might be on the higher end of quotes you'll get but it's definitely ballpark.

I had to "piecemeal" my yard, because the guys offering "packages" just charged too much for what you were actually getting. (Most were "installing" $30/ton rocks for $100/ton, and of course the wife wanted the "expensive" rocks...

I hired a bobcat guy to scrape away the old rocks & curbing, bought the new rocks myself @ Pioneer, had my own plumber install the backflow valve & irrigation valves at the house, hired a random dude off craigslist to run the irrigation tubing, another crew off craigslist to spread the rocks & had the nursery plant everything I bought from them with their own crew. Total outgo was prolly $4k~ish, but that was with plants & irrigation only in the front yard. The backyard is a zero-maintenance moonscape, with just a deep layer of rocks. Yard size is prolly 5k sq ft once you take off the house/driveway/patios..

If I did it over again, I'd prolly do it much the same, with the exception of the irrigation tubing. You can rent the monster ditch-witch at the depot for a few hundred bucks & do a better job in just a couple hours (without much sweat) than I think I got from the random dude with a *****xe & a shovel.

Quick update, I found someone off craigslist as well, Sun of The Valley Landscaping, they did the job for 26k less than the highest bid! They did an amazing job from design to overall customer service and a friendly crew, I will definitely be using them for my back yard next!

i got a quote on one of my rentals (not a fancy place, it rents for about $1k a month) that included $8000 for boulders.

some people must just say yes to whatever proposal is thrown in front of them, otherwise they wouldn't write estimates like that.

Zippyman - are you able to share your plumber's contact info? I'm assuming you're happy with his work/pricing?
We need a backflow valve replaced on our irrigation / outdoor tap as it's 17 years old and has recently started leaking.
