$20 in Ajo was for full coverage per day on my oldest vehicle valued at 5k

Most U.S. companies don't write policies for Mexico. Some will sell you a rider for an existing policy, but those coverages may or may not satisfy Mexican authorities and won't be any cheaper than that sold by Sanborn's. Mexican companies' policies sold on this side of the border are legit and usually pay no-fault and in cash.
Driving into Mexico without a Mexican policy is incredibly stupid. Get in an accident without insurance and not only will you spend an expensive time in and getting out of jail, you'll never, ever see your vehicle again.

Rocky Point is no more unsafe (I would argue it's MORE safe) than any beach resort in the U.S. Unless of course there are no violent or property crimes in CA or FLA cities.

Sanborns for auto insurance is the way to go. You can buy it online or in person before you cross. I've never had to use it, but I've had two friends who did, and they were paid fast and without hassle.
I believe my truck at a value of 40 k is around 80 to 100 for a 3 day weekend. Make sure you purchase enough time to allow you to cross the border, if that makes sense.
Not worth it to have the insurance end on Sunday morning and you aren't leaving until that afternoon.

I personally would not take your most valuable vehicle there. We take our oldest vehicle for obvious reasons. Taking some gaudy set of wheels with custom wheels makes you. A potential target.

While I worked on the Southern border, I have seen many vehicles turned back by Mexican Border Agents for not being insured. It was just unlucky drivers being inspected by an Officer who had a bad day. There are 3-4 Insurance booths before reaching the point of crossing, so there is really no excuse about "forgetting" to buy it. The $100 for a weekend was probably full coverage... lot of companies like AIG will sell you ONE week policies for under $50 online or through several websites. Don't neglect driving to Mexico without coverage, you will be asking for it!!!!

On a second note, thanks to both US and Mexican Fed. Govt. cooperation, that one night's skirmish in Rocky Point was a successful and total elimination of Cartel wannabees trying to move in on territories with Real Estate owned by US Citizens. The media reported 7 dead... yeah right, multiply that by 10. RP is just as safe as East Mesa... people are nice and friendly. Heck, they even make dinner for you at their homes for $5 bucks

Here are the current Insurance rates***:

*** These rates are calculated on a basic model sedan worth $5k with $50k minimal liability... Your quote will be different based on year, model and Liability limits of course.

The water was about as clear as it was on our last trip to Miami. Still amazed by at the amount of tidal shift.

We got insurance online through Baja Bound. They're a broker for Ace Seguros. $45 for 9k policy for 4 days.
