Hi all, long time contributor here but I forgot my login data. My friend and I are going to Nogales tomorrow to cross over into Mexico for the evening. He says it is absolutely no big deal with AZ drivers license and birth certificate to get back in Saturday morning. Is that true? I've read far varying tales regarding the topic. thanks all,

I thought it changed a couple years ago and you need a passport or passport card to come back from Mexico?

Why bother? (and I make this comment as someone who lived part time in Mexico for two years and sincerely likes it. But Nogales? It's a pit. Better food, music, safety and atmosphere can be found in South Phoenix without the hours of driving.)

Excellent advice, Jkgourmet . . . beautifully stated.

As for the OP's original question . . . do you have an expired passport?

Just your driver's license will suffice! If you don't trust me, ask a customs agent before you cross: I forgot my Passport, or I don't have one, is this a problem?

I just love Mexican border towns. If you're going, if you can, go over there on a Saturday night when everyone comes out for fun! Weekdays, the bars can be quite empty and lifeless.

I even go to the working-class cantina's when I'm over there, with the single light bulbs in the bar, and they can be the most fun! I'm sure Nogales also has a Karaoke bar, or 2, try one of those for fun and for some outstanding singing talent!

Compared to Tijuana's notorious Zona Norte red-light/bar district, the red-light district and bars are far slimmer in choices.

I'd also stay over, try the Colonial Inn! Or if you want upscale, they have one of those as well!

Just be careful of those you tell of your going to Nogales as you may be inundated with requests to buy prescription drugs from the Pharmacia's to bring back with you. It happens every time I tell someone at work I'm going down there.

"As long as your down there, could you bring me back some of this or that or this or that?"

One of the great pluses of spending a night in a Mexican border town, like Nogales, is you can cut loose and not worry about getting a DUI on your way back to your hotel at night.

I'm sure South Phoenix has the food (not any better) music and more safety (which I find questionable), but given the car-centricism of Phoenix, why take the risk, and make Joe Arpaio happy with another potential DUI arrest!

just to clarify - it's legal to bring back medicines from Mexico without a prescription as long as :

They're in a reasonable quantity (90 days is ok with customs)

They're for your own use.

They *aren't* "scheduled" drugs - i.e. opiates, etc. - it's not worth the hassle to bring back scheduled drugs- you need both a mexican and a us prescription to safely do so, & most of them are already pretty cheap here.

Things like antibiotics, viagra, heart meds, diabetes meds & the like are all fine.

I was with someone who forgot their passport at the Algodones crossing - they were put in the "secondary" line, which took prolly an extra half-hour to get through instead of the standard 2-minute-per-person line..

^^^

Valuable information for those contemplating purchasing drugs at the pharmacias in Nogales, but best to compare the prices at 3 pharmacias before you buy, as the prices vary from pharmacia to pharmacia!

I've been buying meds in Mexico for 22 years, and it has saved me a heap of money and frustration!

Hi all, thanks for the input. I have not gone to the post office yet to submit my documents for the passport card. I figured I would bring my AZ license and birth certificate. Sure hope not a big deal but I don't believe they can legally not allow reentry. I have heard they will make you wait in a different line though as another poster mentioned.

Expect secondary screening which can take 1/2 to an hour or two more depending on how much they want to hassle you for not having a PP. My MIL went to Algodones without one and it took her about 1/2 hour longer being interviewed about her citizenship and getting educated on the passport law (mostly waiting around for an agent to talk to her).
