We lock our gate with a padlock. The landscapers come every 2 weeks, and I open it for them in the morning (they come on Saturdays) and lock it after they leave again. Leaving it unlocked is not an option. There are some areas that have reports of people opening people's gates and their dogs escape - it was prevalent in San Tan Valley last summer/fall. Between that, and having a pool, I won't leave ours open for extended periods of time.
