I never understood the whole shutting off the AC thing...is it kind of like a moral victory?

I mean, set it to whatever you normally would, if it never turns on, then what's the difference vs actually shutting it off? If it does turn on, that means it's needed.

It's hard to justify opening windows and possibly having the a/c coming on and wasting money though.

Well, if the AC is coming on...

We never ever open our windows though.

Heh...no, we never open them. Ok maybe once in a blue moon, but really almost never. A few of the windows I took the screens off (didn't like the view with the screen on) so it's kind of weird to just have it wide open to the ouside (birds, bugs, etc).

There's no general answer, it all depends on one's personal preferences and how long warm weather stays, for me the Climate Control System (A/C and heating system) is still on "Cool", but it doesn't run as much as it did a month ago, and certainly not as much as it did in August. Right now it might run once or twice during the day, and it won't run at night.

I usually switch off the entire system in late October and I don't switch it to Heat until mid or late November, when morning temperatures start getting into the upper 40s/low 50s.

Looks like it's going to have to go back on since it's going to be in low 90's coming up here. And the heater? That never goes on, I hate the heat and I simply refuse to have the heater on. I got my house down to 51 degrees last year and slept so good! Wife and cats think I'm odd but deep down they enjoyed it too. If you're cold grab a blanket!

I need a cold, cold room to sleep well, too, and a fan running all year long. (even when I lived in the frozen north, fan all year) I rarely ran the heat last year, either. At my house you can grab a dog or cat if you are cold. They make great space heaters.

Am not specifically referring to any of the posters in this thread; however, what I have experienced first-hand are individuals who seem to like to make a competition out of when they use either a/c or heat in their homes.

Some may just be curious, and that's all there is to it; but there are those who want to make a contest out of it, or appear to boast about the superior insulation in their home.

I use the heat or a/c to make it comfy for me; what others do is up to them.
