Another reason why Tempe is arguably the most buzz worthy city in the Valley right now!

"Tesla Motors is preparing to expand its presence in metro Phoenix with a new service center and showroom in Tempe, about two miles east of Arizona State University, according to plans approved by the city last month. The electric-car manufacturer plans to redevelop a former furniture and appliance store at University and River drives, where it will build a 40,000-square-foot facility for maintenance, charging and delivery of Tesla cars to its customers in the Valley."

What ever happened to the whole not selling cars in AZ because of the whiny dealership union/organization/association/thing complaining about Tesla not using a middle man (i.e. a traditional dealership instead of manufacturer-direct)?

I was wondering the EXACT same thing. I believe that controversy was surrounding a Scottsdale showroom, which they have now in the Fashion Square.

I guess Tesla is really starting to catch on.

Tesla still cannot directly sell cars in Arizona. Their facilities in Scottsdale and this new one in Tempe don't/won't offer sales. You can order your car online and pick them up here though.

It got voted down in the House. Local politics won. The dealerships paid off the local politicians and won.....allegedly speaking of course

That was really stupid. It would have been a huge boon to allow Tesla to directly sell here. When you are competing for a giga factory and you are telling the very company that you are courting that you are not allowed to directly sell here, it's just pure foolishness and bad business. Where was Ducey and the pro-business politicians then. That's why you have to laugh at the Republican mantra of pro business and less red tape. They are only that way when it has matters that appeal to them and will gladly use government interference to step in the way of Tesla and the new Glendale casino. And notice, I specifically references business related topics not all the social issues they interfere in. I was pretty disappointed to see our Republican leaders not do more to facilitate Tesla selling here director or enabling the new Glendale casino as both would create jobs and enhance the economy.

That is true BUT it still helps to have another facility in the Valley to do repairs and offer a showroom. I can see them opening more of these. They will probably put one on the west side (Peoria) and then another one in the east valley (think Gilbert San Tan Village area).

They truly are magnificent vehicles. If you have the money to spend, you should truly test drive one. You will be changed. It is not at all like you perceive one of these cars to look and drive like.

I'm not sure of that actually... I'm only vaguely sure of the one in the Fashion Square

But I think this answers our question about the controversy

Quote:
the Senate Committee in Arizona passed a bill yesterday that will allow the maker of electric cars to sell its vehicles directly through its own outlets. The amended bill, House Bill 2132, will override an existing state law in place since 2000 that restrains carmakers from bypassing traditional car dealerships to reach end consumers.

I live 1 block north, does anyone else think that is kind of a "rachet" area to have a Tesla dealer? It seems like directlynear AZ Mills, Tempe Marketplace, or Mesa Riverview would be better, not a ways away from them.

Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) News: Arizona Passes Bill to Accommodate Tesla
It doesn't answer it because you cited an old article. Your article is from March 2014. One month later, it died in the legislature. The article above actually addressed this.

"A bill that would have allowed Tesla to sell directly to consumers in Arizona died in the state Legislature that same year."

Here is another article

"Tesla bill on auto sales dead at Arizona Legislature"

"A bill to allow Tesla Motors to sell its cars directly to consumers in Arizona is dead at the Legislature.
State Sen. John McComish, R-Ahwatukee, said House Bill 2123 is not being considered by the Arizona Senate. The measure would have lifted current prohibitions on auto manufacturers selling directly to consumers instead of going through dealerships."
