^^^This. There are plenty of non luxury apt complexes in every corner of town. I would prefer staying in a nicer complex if I lived in an apartment. If they want to label it a luxury complex, so be it.

If more people start pushing their future employers to pay for the increased cost of living you would see things change. People need to start looking for new jobs while they still have a job and hold the potential new employers feet to the fire. If employer X wants to operate in some posh area then make him pay a premium to employ you so that you can live 5-10 min away from work.

Calculate out how much a decent place is next to your new employer plus all the other living expenses and how much disposable income you expect to have and just set that number. If its a big number so be it, other companies will start moving out of those areas if potential employees stop tolerating it. People should be able to put a decent amount into savings after their living expenses are covered.

that way employers could only get desperate people but once they started they should be looking for a new job so they can pressure the next employer. Once this got started employers would be forced to pay to have people work in their rich pretentious posh areas or they would move their operations due to a lack of interest in people living in sub par living conditions living hand to mouth just to work there (unless they are doing it to get off unemployment).

People need to start pushing employment contracts as well, at least one year, if they hire you and you move and go through all the crap they have to pay you out for one year if they fire you for any reason within that year (other than for felony level crimes). I wont even entertain a job move unless I have a contract (or its a GS level non temp fed job).

As employees all we can blame is ourselves.

Go to CL, then the rentals section, set your prices. I set $300 min, $600 max. There were 2500 entries. If you look hard enough you can find them.

Most of us might not want to stay in the cheaper apts. The prices aren't going to change. Because everybody else is taking them. The only thing you can do is refuse to move into the higher priced places. But you're going to be in the minority.

You have to make a decision. What's important to you? What do you absolutely need in an apt? Then pay for it.

Good luck.
