We're narrowing down our plans to relocate to Scottsdale, and we've found a lot of interesting townhome/condo options in the Grayhawk area. Specifically, south of East Thompson Peak Parkway, west of North Pima Road and further west, past North Hayden Road.

My question is whether or not there's a controversial amount of airport noise in these neighborhoods. I found an older contour map showing the 60 DNL dropping off abruptly where the 101 meets East Princess Drive, which suggests there's a bit of a buffer and that the area west of North Hayden Road is probably least impacted. Still, it's close.

I'm just wondering if anyone can speak from experience. Obviously, patience for this type of noise is subjective, and I think we're among the least likely people to have a problem with it, but I'd like to hear it from others.

I work directly south of that area, much closer to the airport. I never hear anything indoors. I live about the same distance from the airport, just east instead of north. Aside from seeing the occasional low flying airplane about the land, and having to drive around it daily, I honestly don't even notice the airport. I don't think it gets much traffic.

Its not too bad over there at all. Most of the traffic there is smaller planes, but you do get a lot of jets, too. I have a friend that lives right by the golf course, and its never really been an issue. Or at least its not obtrusive enough to notice (like having to raise voices when they go over).

Just do realize youre moving relatively close to the airport and there will be noise. Dont be those people that move near an airport then demand noise restrictions, etc. Those people are the worst! ugh

I'm not worried about it, but it's something that would be difficult to get a handle on during a visit to the neighborhood and I wondered if I'd get responses along the lines of "oh, no, it's terrible". I know there's some complaining about it in the news in recent years, but most of the complaining I see reported to the north mentions Ironwood Village - right past the end of the runway and the marked 60 DNR area.

We'll have to pay our own visit and spend a day up there, but I'm sure it's not a problem. Thanks for the input!

We lived in that area for a couple years & never noticed any airplane noise. I think a lot of the planes coming into that airpark are mini jets - the deer valley airport has more small piston-engine aircraft coming in & even they aren't nearly as obnoxious as the larger commercial jets or low helicopters you might see in other parts of town.

Those are the NIMBYs, and they are the worst. They often stop at nothing in their attempts to restrict development which impedes "their" views or "their" tranquility. They raise a fuss about noise from jets, small aircraft, freeways, trains, or practically anything else ... even though the airports, freeways, or railroads have been established long before they moved here. If NIMBYs love their views and tranquility so much, why do they choose to live in a large metro area? Seems to me they'd be happier in a small isolated town, or out in the middle of nowhere.

Agreed 100%. If you move near an airport, you have to realize there will be jet noise. Its just the nature of the beast.

I believe the landing/takeoff pattern is for planes to always take off to the Southwest and land from the Northeast. So the plane noise you get North of the airport is when they are gliding in to land, not full throttle as they take off. There is still noise but not too bad.
