Really dumb move by this adult to go out hiking with the kid. But not sure what you mean by sooner or later, there have been multiple deaths from people hiking in the heat this year, and every year.

I guess I had not seen any this year maybe there has been. As far as 12 year old his own fault 12 year old isn't to blame his stupid mother and her boyfriend is. I don't think we need another law it's common sense that one hikes at his own risk. I doubt there will be any lawsuit but you never know attorney's love to make money.

Hiking is dangerous, period. I live near Great Smoky mountain NP and every year we hear stories of hikers in trouble up there, either killed or hurt for various reasons. Falls, weather related (both heat and cold here depending on altitude and time of year) or getting lost. I love hiking but I am aware of the dangers. Wilderness areas are dangerous, you should ALWAYS have enough water, and you should have the proper gear. If you fall and hurt your self out there you cannot just dial up 911. I hike with my son, and I watch him closely even though he is getting older. The mountains, gorges and waterfalls are beautiful but they are not a place to take lightly. If you are stupid out there then those beautiful places are very unforgiving. Very sad to hear a young man lost his life, they should have had enough water and they should have avoided hiking in that kind of extreme heat.

Sad to say, but this poor kid was not the first this year, nor will he be the last. I believe AZ averages close to 50 heat-related deaths a year.

The above number seemed high (I was not factoring in border crossers), until I found this: Arizona Department of Health Services If you factor out the deaths of those crossing the border (which I tend to put in a different category than people dying from the heat in urban and suburban areas), the number would go down quite a bit, but it's still high.

That puts the number at well over 100 people a year. Crazy. I know last year 64 people died at the hands of heat here in the low desert, which in and of itself is a already-ridiculous number.

Here we go again:

Woman, boy flown off Camelback Mountain trail with heat issues

The article notes that the hikers had been on the trail since 7 AM. At this time of year, that is when hikes should end, not when they should begin.

The other problem is the image of hiking. People think hiking is just a nice easy stroll in some woods with a walking stick.

Hiking is a very aerobic activity. It burns a lot of calories and is strenuous. Now imaging doing this when it is over a 110 degree outside with no water in the middle of nowhere.

People somehow equate hiking with walking and it's not the case.

Fire just brought a 33 year old man off Piestewa Peak at 230 this afternoon. He went to the top, and on the way bafck didn't think he could make it all the way down. He had plenty of water, reportedly, but in this heat, HELLO, people... that is not enough. Why is ANYONE doing mountain hikes in this weather???
