The same thing crossed my mind when I read the question.

Also, it's good to note the detail that smokers can smoke outside of establishments as long as it's outside of the 20ft radius from the door. Consequently, bars often have a gathering of 20+ people in front smoking and socializing.

Also, though there's a lot of general animosity toward smokers, I was watching the Gilbert city council meeting on tv a few weeks ago (I know, I'm a nerd!) and they were discussing where the smoking area should be placed in one of the big community parks here in Gilbert. Some of the council members wanted it to be on the edge of the park (which is huge, so the area would have practically been on the street), while most council members, even those who claim to hate being around second hand smoke, favored a more reasonable distance, and reasonable "please everyone" legislation. Mayor Berman explained that Gilbert has what used to be the AZ attitude of rugged individualism, so creating laws to isolate people that much would alienate a lot of people, even those who favor restrictions on smoking in public, because people would resist too much government interferance in Gilbert. Anyway, I thought it was interesting and gave me a bit of Gilbert pride, even though I didn't grow up in Gilbert, to know that despite its conservative reputation, the council still respects all people.

I was merely trying to be respectful since there are people who approve & disapprove of the ban. However, I am very glad to see there is a public smoking ban. Thanks for everyone's feedback!

I mean does the Phoenix area have NICE bars with soft music and flattering lighting and lots of dark wood and soft leather chairs that you can go to and drink delicious beverages that may or may not contain alcohol and smoke good cigars while being served by a delightful bartender that really knows how to make a drink? Perhaps even have a bite of food? Perhaps some oysters or some smoked salmon with a bit of red onion and capers? Or does it all go down the drain when food comes into it?

And, if the answer be yes, pray tell, could ye perhaps turn me in the right direction?

And who is this Mrs. Basha I keep hearing about???

(Gosh, I love smileys!!)

I'm all for smokers being able to go outside, sit on the patio, etc.

I get really pissed, however, when someone in a car in front of me flicks their butts onto the road. I live by the zoo, surrounded by a lot of park space, and people throw their ciggies into the medium, which is native brush.

These folks are making it much harder for the avg. smoker to enjoy a puff, as I'll be more likely to support more bans due to the asshats who show their disrespect.

So, nobody know of any like the one I described above?

Thank goodness for the smoking ban in restaurants. We tried to go to one of the Indian casinos and made it up to the front door, took one step inside and turned around and went home. I could not breath that junk.

While I am not a smoker (my husband likes a good cigar occasionally after a fine dinner) smoke doesn't usually bother me, but OMG! those Indian casinos! You can't BREATHE! That is completely due to improper ventilation. We have casinos in Detroit and just look at Vegas...you certainly don't get hit in the face with smoke like on the indian reservations.

Well, now I am confused.

Some of you say, yes, some no...and when I try to look anything up it seems like you guys change laws every few months, so I don't know what is current. I looked at Smoke-free-Arizona and it has exceptions including...

"Veterans and fraternal clubs when they are not open to the general public"

And outdoor PATIOS at bars/restaurants are exempt?

This gets confusing.
