Are there any buses running from Phoenix to L.A. other than Greyhound?

And there's still no direct train, right?

Greyhound and one of the "Mexican" bus services are your only options I think

Tufesa provides bus service between Phoenix and Los Angeles. The company's own website is hard to use if you're not fluent in Spanish, so try wanderu.com instead.

Amtrak's Sunset Limited runs between Maricopa (about 35 miles south of Phoenix) and Los Angeles three days a week.

Why would you put yourself through that? There are tons of cheap, direct flights on Southwest. You can even avoid LAX if that's the rub.

Fear of flying, perhaps. There's lots of people out there who feel that way.

You can fly Southwest in 75 minutes. Round trip airfare is around $160. Not too much more than you'd spend on gas driving to LA alone.

There's no train in Phoenix.

Im sure the fare from Flag to LA on Amtrak's Southwest Chief would be cheaper than a flight? We used to pay $300 a person from Chicago to Flag, round trip. You can probably rent a car dirt cheap from here to Flag, and leave it at the train station (there's parking for rented cars), making it ultra convenient.

Amtrak used to go to Union Station downtown, but in 96, when Union Pacific took over Southern Pacific, they wanted to move more freight at Amtraks expense, so now, Amtrak stops in Maricopa.

If you watch the remake of The Getaway (the Alec Baldwin one), that was shot here in 93, and an actual Amtrak train is featured, running by the Greyhound Park

Round trip would be as little as $116 but it's 11 hours going and 10 hours returning. Flying is definitely the better cost/time value.
