Just moved to Fountain Hills, Eagle Mountain neighborhood from the East. Our house and the others in the neighborhood all have bells (like an alarm bell) on the outside of the house. The house also has sprinklers. Is it some type of fire alarm to alert the neighborhood? We've never seen this before "out east".

Its a scorpion deterrent. Scorpions hate bells and will not enter homes that have said bells. If you find a scorpion, ring the bell and all invading scorpions will flee.

Joking aside, I have absolutely no idea what they're for.

It's a fire alarm so that others will know you house is on fire.

So all your neighbors can come out and watch your house burn down?

It's like Arby's bell, it's an appreciation bell. You ring it when you go outside on a beautiful day to let the world know what a beautiful day it is. At night just before going to bed you ring it to let the burglars lurking in the area know you're home. Ring it twice tells them you're armed with an AK-47.

I personally appreciate the many different uses. Should I ever live in Fountain Hills, I would use the bell on Taco Tuesdays.

My Grandma had an old fashioned bell outside her house near the porch...the kind you ring yourself. She used it to call my Grandpa in from the yard (he had a very large yard), for meals or a phone call.

It's a fire alarm that works in conjunction with the sprinklers in your house. A lot of jurisdictions are starting to require this. It had been common practice for years in multi-family and commercial developments.. Most cities are requiring it on single family homes, now.

Which "most cities" are you referring to? I've never seen this in my travels throughout the valley.
