Looks like the demise of Sky Harbor Airport has greatly been exaggerated !
I guess they will have to come with something else..........again.

I saw some people complaining about Charlotte passing Phoenix. One thing to consider is 80% of the US lives within a 2 hour flight to Atlanta. Charlotte is only 4 hours to the north via car, so its probably up there in that statistic too.

Charlotte is a major, major southern hub. Most, if not all, of the smaller southeastern cities have connecting flights to Charlotte. Some airports Charlotte is your only commercial option. Charlotte and Atlanta are your gateways out of the southeast.

Just one thing to consider with Charlotte. Its a convenient location, and the airport has recently expanded. But I've heard Charlotte is becoming very crowded. Will be interesting to see how things progress.

Sky Harbor just got another non-stop international flight. Flights to Frankfurt, Germany will begin in May of next year. Perhaps we are FINALLY becoming a true, world class international airport.

That is only a seasonal flight, and only flies 2 days a week, IIRC. It's a baby step, but not going to make much of an impact.

It's a seasonal direct transatlantic flight. It's a pretty good baby step.

That's how the Austin flight started in 2016 - seasonal from June through September. In July of that same year, they announced that seasonal service in 2017 would be extended from May-October of this year.

One thing that isn't mentioned here is Allegiant's growth at AZA/IWA.

Allegiant just announced a significant expansion of its operations there with new service to Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Louisville, Omaha, St. Louis, Boise, and St. Petersburg, FL.

Press Release - Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

Allegiant is, hands down, the absolute worst airline in the developed world. I would rather skip to my destination, barefoot, on broken glass, than deal with them.

Phoenix is also a major transportation hub ... in fact, it's the transportation center of the SW. The only other major airport we've competed with is LAX, but McCarran Int'l in Las Vegas has also become a significant hub mainly due to the tourism. I believe Sky Harbor has lost some of its ranking because of Las Vegas. People from around the nation & world go there for the casinos, nightlife, and the top notch entertainment ... these are things that Phoenix lacks. On the other hand, Phoenix has the opportunity to be more of a corporate hub, and that's what we need to focus on. As I said before, if other major airports are passing Sky Harbor, it's because Phoenix has allowed it to happen.

I'd be willing to agree if it wasn't just a seasonal flight. If Sky Harbor had more direct year round flights to Europe AND Asia, it would be a true world class international airport.
