Taking the family for our first trip to AZ. Staying at a resort in Scottsdale. Family of four, kids are 15 and 11. We are going to a Diamondbacks game but other than that have no plans. Open to anything. Prefer not to drive more than 2 hours from Hotel. Touristy stuff is perfectly fine.

Trip is 2nd week in August

Salt River Tubing
Scottsdale's Museum of the West (if your kids can tolerate museums)
Heard Museum (Native American History)
Old Town Scottsdale (shopping and dining)
Drive the Apache Trail. Bring swimsuits and towels if you want to jump in one of the lakes.

August isn't a great time of year for outdoor activity in Phoenix (but better than June). If you want to do any hiking, it's best to go early in the morning.

Be helpful if you could elaborate on what made you pick Phoenix in the first place? And then what types of activities do all of you like to do?

Go hiking (assuming it's cool enough) in magnificent Sedona and have lunch or dinner in its downtown area. Lots of restaurants there have jaw-dropping views. Stop at Montezuma Castle on the way.

Musical Instrument Museum. If your kids like music at all, this is a world class museum. And a stone's throw from Scottsdale.

As others have said, there's a lot to do indoors here but don't plan to be outdoors mid-day in August, unless it's the pool and we do have some amazing ones. There are a lot of hiking and natural swimming areas within a 2 hour drive. Fossil springs, clear creek, and so on but be mindful of monsoon weather and don't risk injuries or worse.

A few ideas- botanical garden, the zoo, odysea aquarium, science center, SMOCA, indoor sky diving, kayaking one of the rivers or lakes, swim up movie night at one of the resorts, lots of great Mexican food to sample, top golf, one of the many arcade bars, early morning or night hikes )a guide may be a good idea), star gazing- the state parks have a lot of organized events for night tours, take a drive to cave creek, kart or car racing at firebird raceway and endless others.

Take a guided tour of the city- HOME
Tour the Rosen house then eat at Bianco.
Drive to the top of south mountain, to dobbins point
Rent a boat and explore saguaro lake
Checkout tovrea and mystery castles
Take an adventure tour Fort McDowell Adventures | Arizona Attractions | Things To Do In Scottsdale | Venues In Phoenix
Watch the bats Bat Viewing Opportunities
Take a cruise on the dolly steamboat http://www.dollysteamboat.com/
Taliesen West- Taliesin West Tickets & Tours | Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation

It'd be good to know what you and your family like to help narrow down our advice, Phoenix is a big city with a lot to see and do.
