Hi CD forum,

So I have a 1500 sq foot south Scottsdale ranch house, 3 adults live here and any space would help, I'm considering moving the water heater from the middle of the house to the side somewhere in a water heater shed/closet, but it's a gas heater, gas and plumbing is not my specialty, so I'd contract it, any idea what the price for this would be?

Thanks as always to anyone who replies.

Have you considered a tankless water heater? Here's a link to reviews:

Is your house on a slab ? If so, are your existing pipes in the slab ? Overhead ? Are the existing pipes copper, plastic , PEX ? Can you use a PEX manifold to interface with the existing pipes....where can the interface be placed ? Too many variables to consider without a site visit....best bet is to call a plumber....better yet, call several.

Cold water supply has to be plumbed into the PEX manifold (like this one), then the cold goes to the water heater, which is heated and returned to the manifold which is the distribution point for hot and cold to your fixtures.

IMO, PEX is the only way to go.

I'd expect the cost to be prohibitive for the amount of space you'd be able to reclaim. The tankless suggestion is a good idea, IMO. Or look for other ways to use your space more efficiently.

Agreed. I can't imagine that the water heater makes that much difference as far as living space, but the tankless water heater, while expensive, will be WAY less than what I expect the cost of moving the one you have would be.
