I haven't touched a beer or drug for many years now. But I was just curious what the "base" scene here was like.
It was a problem all over Phoenix, not just on the west side. Sections of Mesa, Chandler, Tempe (along eastern sections of Apache), and Phoenix (24th Street and Broadway was apparently a "hot" corner for sales. According to the AZ Republic archives, there was even a crack house in Paradise Valley that was raided by the DEA in the late 1980s. Most of the crack in Phoenix was brought in by gangs from Los Angeles.

Back in the late 80's early 90's when it blew up the LA gangs from Compton when they branched out Phoenix was one of their first territories. Crack was a huge problem and South Phoenix was the epicenter. Especially around 24th st and Broadway you see dirt lots now, but there were groups of gang members standing outside the liquor store and Chinese takeout place on the southwest corner. They eventually tore those down followed by the apartments on the northeast corner and the laundromat on the northwest corner.

The Broadway gangsters controlled that corner. There were huge gang wars when the Mexicans Southside posse started moving in.

Crystal Meth has replaced crack as the big problem now. I lost a friend to meth recently. He was a high power attorney and has been out of work for a year. He has gone through two rehab programs and returned to using. I knew nothing about it until he came to my house one day and told me about it. He had graduated to shooting up. I don't think he will ever recover. How smart people can do this I will never know. The recovery rate from this is in the teens. I expect to hear one day that he overdosed.

Prescribed opioids seem to be all the rage these days.

Approach this as if you were an investigative reporter. Know someone in the medical field? Talk to an off duty patrol person doing paid security. Approach a convenience store clerk during off hours for insight. Getting new tires or a vehicle tune up?
Fly this question upon job completion and they'll likely give you several minutes of eye raising missives from what they've seen.
An employment center as Goodwill could have someone give you an earful... in the way you'd like. Be creative by coming up with a source you'd never thought of and the education may raise goosebumps and more than you really wanted to know.

I picked up a girl hitchhiking near Campbell and 24th St., pathetic crack addict...twenty years ago. Meth is 100 times bigger in PHX, and it may have something to do with the relatively low number of blacks. Smokeshops sell the glass tubes...they are mostly used for meth.

I know that I was given all the oxycodone that I could ever want in hospital stays. You want some more? Crystal meth was something I had only heard of. Nasty stuff that rewires your brain. Poison. Very commonly used by gay white men to ease the self loathing and self hatred. If you have time to kill, Google this and read. I couldn't help my friend because I couldn't control him. People you care about will lie to your face to continue using drugs. Now that I have done a little reading, I am seeing meth users all around me. Meth-face, meth-rant etc. You may mistake a user for just a really happy energetic person.

I think the crack thing was mostly associated with black people. Phoenix has a very small population.
