Good place to live? Stuff to do? High or low crime? Commute to Phoenix, or Tempe? Restaurants I need to check out?
Tell me more! 😊

Good place to live? Depends on where in Mesa. haha Stuff to do? Of course. Lots to do. Its a suburb of 500,000 people, so naturally there are plenty of things to do. Just don't expect it to have Scottsdale levels of entertainment in either quality or quantity. High or low crime? Depends on the area. Most of Mesa is quite poor and not desirable at all, and those areas suffer from high crime. Commute to Tempe? Depends on where in Mesa you are. Same goes for the commute to Phoenix, and where in Phoenix you need to go.

Westside Mesa can be pretty sketchy from Dobson to Gilbert. Remember Mesa is known for Mormons, illegals, bikers and meth. The national chapter of the hells angels is in Mesa. Just use common sense and all will be fine.

Yeah we're by the last light rail station, on Broadway. Wondered why the apartment was cheap. it doesn't have to be permanent though, if we don't like it!

In a city of half a million, "most' of it is "quite poor"? Gross exaggeration.

I just read somewhere it depends on West vs. East? I think I'll be in the west part, near Tempe. Is that ghetto? on Broadway?

Along Broadway is not the very best part, but the closer to Tempe the better in that area. It's the central part of Mesa that is the least desirable, gets better as you move out in all directions.

First, Mesa is a HUGE city. Nearly 140 square miles, or about 60% the size in area of Chicago. Thus, due to it's size, there are definitely good and bad parts. The worst parts are the areas between about Dobson Rd to the west, Stapley or Gilbert Rd to the east, University to the north, and US60 to the south. That generally speaking, there are a few other pockets of not as nice parts, as well, and along Main Street in general is just older and looks pretty run from the west border all the way to Apache Junction except for a 1/2 mile to mile long area in the original downtown. That said, there are a lot of very nice areas in Mesa, too. Dobson Ranch area is decent, Las Sendas is a very nice, wealthy master plan community in the far NE part of Mesa (and Mountain Bridge is very nice, too), and there's the area north of Brown Rd in the old citrus grove areas of the city (around Boeing, etc). In fact, most of the areas east of Gilbert Rd are at least decent. Southeast Mesa south of the 60 and around Mesa-Gateway Airport (former Williams AFB) is all newer subdivisions that are very family friendly and have good schools. Eastmark is over there and is the best selling new home master plan community in the state. As far as shopping, it varies. There is the dying Fiesta Mall over close to you, but you'll probably do a lot of your shopping at Mesa Riverview or Tempe Marketplace. Superstition Springs Mall is over on the east side of Mesa along the 60 and has a lot of shopping, also, but I don't see why you'd go all the way over there from where you'll be. The good thing about west Mesa is the access to other parts of the Valley is good with the 60, 101, 202, and I-10 all being pretty close. It's just a hop, skip and a jump to Scottsdale, Tempe, the airport, or even downtown Phoenix.
