What a grand hotel the Westward Ho could be again. I don't think there is another building in Phoenix with such grand presence, such attention to detail.

I ran into these buildings at South Mountain Park...never seen them, never heard of them...but very fascinating. I'm not sure on their history or why they are there, wasn't able to find much online either...maybe someone here knows?

The Westward Ho would be great if the huge antenna on top were removed and the building spruced up. Here's a comment that may be controversial: Right now the Westward Ho is used as senior housing. It seems to be the Phoenix instance of a nationwide trend in decades past of putting senior housing in Downtowns. Maybe the theory was that those who no longer drive could walk to services and retail. The problem is that senior housing Downtown tends to reinforce the "deserted after dark" image, ultimately driving most services and retail out of Downtown. Please understand that I don't advocate putting anyone's grandma or grandpa out on the street, but in the long term, we've got to make Downtown attractive to a wide variety of people, including those of all ages who want to go out after dark.

What a beautiful building! It has such wonderful details. I hope that some day it can restored to it previous grandeur (without putting the elderly out on the street as silverbear already stated ) and not torn down to be replaced by some new construction.
Thank you for such great pictures and I hope someone knows the story on those other buildings too.

Some of those older stone-built structures might be related to the land grants from the 1800's. I know there are a few remaining stone-built structures out along the various highways in AZ, which were directly related to the land grant program.

Some of the various land grant programs in the 1800's stated someone could/would be granted land from the US/state/territorials as long as they made a basic improvement, such as a house or a farm, etc. However, most of this land has either been long sold off, or converted/reclaimed as Native American lands, but some of these stone structures remain.
