I am a married late 30's man. I am looking for a quiet bar to spend my evenings when my wife was at work.

Here are my preference...

-Within 15min of drive time from where I live (E Camelback x 40th St.).

-Bartender that doesn't get annoyed when you talk to them.

-A crowd that doesn't mind talking to strangers.

-Decent local brew selection.

Thank you very much!

The Whining Pig comes to mind. OHSO too, but that’s more of a restaurant. Good bar and great beer selection though. The Attic and Arcadia Tavern are both solid neighborhood options as well. I’ll try to think of more.

I'd recommend trying Shady's. It's on Indian School Road near 28th Street.

His wife may have different tastes and likes for bars and maybe doesn't go to one.

PHX Newbie, we don't understand what you mean.

My wife usually doesn't go to bars. She doesn't mind me go to bars of my own choosing once or twice... per month ;-)

Arcadia should have some good options judging by what I've seen over there but I don't spend much time there. My suggestions are mainly indowntown Phoenix Tempe. A few of my favorites.

It kind of depends on what you're looking for, do you want to games and stuff to do, a certain beer/wine/whiskey selection, are you going to watch a game? I'll pick different spots depending on those.

Phoenix:
Angels Trumpet House
Valley Bar
The Kettle Black
Rose and Crown
Crescent Ballroom
The Duce
The Vig
Melindas Alley
Mother Bunch
Cobra Arcade Bar
Fez
Match

Tempe:
Pedal Haus
Gringo Star
Blasted Barley
Rula Bula
Casey Moores
Loco Patron
Cabin Tempe (whiskey bar)
the Lodge
Culinary Dropout

My comment seems self-evident. If he's going to be sitting in a bar talking to the bartender and other patrons (male and female), his wife may have an issue with the people he spends time with. If she has a veto on those people, then she'll be more comfortable with him sitting in a bar while she is at work. If this doesn't seem to be a reasonable part of an adult relationship, then I can't explain it any further.
