Hi all, I'm thinking about applying to ASU's grad program but I'm in my late 20s and would be there in my early 30s and I don't want to be around a bunch of youngsters partying, so from what I read, this rules out Tempe. I would prefer something pretty cheap but not trashy. I've read that Old Town Scottsdale would work but I'm not into dressing up and getting cocktails, if you know what I mean. I'm coming from Portland, OR, if that helps you get my vibe. So, where is a cheap, not trashy place for someone in their late 20s that's laid back near ASU? Just trying to get a feel for the place before I pay the application fees.

Thanks!

Tempe between Broadway/Southern/Mill/McClintock is perfect for you. The partying generally stays north of Broadway.

Judging by your post, that area might fit you well.

Exactly.... the further south of Broadway, it's easy to forget that the university is even here. And living in Old Town Scottsdale doesn't mean you have to get dressed up and go out for cocktails.

As someone who splits their time between Scottsdale and Portland it think it's fair to say if you're clubbing in Scottsdale an Oregon Tuxedo (jeans, flannel shirt and a pair of Nikes) might be a bit too casual, at least in a number of places...

OP, don't forget to pack provisions if you catch my drift.

South Scottsdale is not all douchey clubs and bougie cocktail bars. There are lots of cool, laid back places like McFate Brewing, Craft 64, Goldwater Brewing, Brat Haus, etc. No need to look elsewhere, and you won’t feel out of place at all if your vibe is more hipster than club douche.
