My wife and I need to move back to Tucson to help care for a family member down there. We are allowed to telecommute from Tucson, but have to spend at least one day a week at our respective work offices in central Phoenix.

I'm assuming we are not the only people in this situation. Any day of the workweek is permissible, so wanted to see what day of the work week has the lightest traffic between Tucson and Phoenix.

I'd assume Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Consider AZ 79, the Pinal Pioneer Parkway. Only adds about 30 minutes. I never see many people on it, and it is much more scenic than Interstate 10.

Once you're out of metro Phoenix it isn't going to be a mess traffic wise. Avoid rush hours and you'll be fine any day of the week.

Depending on where in Tucson is your destination, I would second this, at least for times when you are sick of going up and down the 10. I'm in the middle of six Sunday trips to Tucson, and that road is deadly dull.

Non-holiday Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays have the heaviest commute traffic. I would personally go in on Mondays. The mix of cross country and long distance travelers, truckers, and Phoenix/Vegas/Southern California area bound traffic from Tucson and other parts of southern Arizona on Fridays would be too much. I know you would likely be heading in during the morning hours, but the road can still be loaded with this type of traffic even on Friday mornings, especially before a holiday weekend.

I think it will depend on the time of day more than the actual day. It will help if you can avoid the traditional rush hour and work something like 10-6.

We have pretty flexible schedules and can work anytime up to about 7 PM. Our house in Tucson is 5-10 minutes from the freeway in NW Tucson. I've timed it on the weekends and I can make it from our house to IKEA in 75 minutes. So depending on traffic add another 20-30 minutes to get to midtown.
