Makes sense. I'll have to keep something like this in mind when looking for homes.. when i'm not dodging ugly kitchens.

Security doors are nice for when you have to answer the door for some reason and if they are not who you thought it would be, you still have a barrier of protection between you and them.

This is very true for opening the front door and strangers. The only exception is if a burglar wants to get in, he sees the security door, then you better have some security on all the windows around the house.

Hm, I guess I would go for the cheap DIY and get my friend with a welder to come over and fill in the gaps with some sheet metal or something. Or else compromise and get the Home Depot $250 door. I think we've got a 10% coupon lying around here somewhere.

It's surprising they don't all have bug screens. What's the use otherwise? There are a lot more flies than burglars most nights.

It would be easy to tack up a piece of wood trim for the top to butt against. It's on my list .

They are ugly. Besides most homes in Phoenix have a glass back door that is very breakable plus windows. IMO live in a decent area and don't advertise your 60 inch plasma.

I recently had two sets of doors custom made and installed, for two sets of sliders. I added the sunscreen option. Also, to the bottom half of the door which opens I had tempered glass put on the inside, so the dogs can't go through them. (They said the sunscreens are "pet resistant", but they don't know my dogs ) They consider each set of sliders to be two doors, so I paid what I would have for 4 doors: $5200.

Sliders tend to be a burglar's delight; with these doors I don't have to give that a second thought and can keep the doors open around the clock in this lovely weather, to let the breeze in. I am very happy with mine and do not think they are ugly. Here is a pic, but they are prettier in person.
