I see tomorrow and Wed as 110 degrees and maybe above

I noticed there are no excessive heat watches/warnings like there was late last week? Why is that?

I don't know the exact details, but I believe the National Weather Service has a lower threshold in late spring and early summer. When the heat has just settled in, not as many people have adjusted to it and there's more vulnerability to heat-related illness. Once we've had several weeks of 100+ daytime highs, it seems to take a higher threshold to trigger these watches and warnings.

Weather people are just coming off the weekend, they will get around to it

At 5:30 this morning the NWS Phoenix web site listed 102 as the current temp

It's called 'leapfrog tolerance.' If last week's high was 110 with a warning, then this week has to reach 112 to get a warning and 115 for next week and so on until of course you spontaneously combust, which of course they never warn you about.

as new zonies, we find it amusing that 107 or so gets no sense of alarm, but at 110 its like hell has opened up, and we should all crawl under the bed and pray we dont melt..3 degrees is that big of a deal???

I agree, the weather readers on TV will do there best to alarm everyone this week when the temps go up 3 degrees..they'll say its really going to heat up big time, a MAJOR warm up is coming....3 degrees?

and, of course its a MAJOR cool down if it drops to 100 from 105...I used to think Chicago weather readers were exaggerators, but I guess that comes with the job, no matter what city you are in..

They have really gotten carried away with this excessive heat warnings over the past few years. Used to be that anything short of 115 was just normal or maybe 110 with high humidity in July. But bone dry 110 with 70s in the burbs at night. LOL.

All they do is exaggerate around here, its hilarious. I remember one morning watching April's forecast on Channel 3 and I got excited when she said "stick around and we'll show you the big cool down that's headed for the Valley next week." I was stoked and waited for the forecast after the commercial break. Wanna know what the "big cool down" was? A 5 degree drop to 97 degrees.

Yep. It's basically OVERHYPE.

Sensationalist weather hypesters will alarm you with all manner of HYPE while happily perched in their climate-controlled studios.

They'll HYPE away until they send people into either a panic attack or stupor.

The title of the next weather thread should be EXCESSIVE HYPE!

Considering we are at the time of year where we get 110+ heat waves and it was around 120 last year, I think we are doing well, in fact, mild

And the NWS actually has a different standard for issuing a warning in AZ vs other places in the USA. I guess, like exit2lef said, the threshold has changed since we've had several days over 100 and a few 110+

Or maybe they are deciding now :P

I'd say those warnings are more for tourists and "immortal" hikers and runners
